Peter Doig (born 1959) is a Scottish-born British artist with international fame in the art world of painting.
His style is representative and thus somewhat realistic on initial appearance, in fact there is also an impressionistic quality to some of his work.

There is an interesting range of locations and people that he chooses as his subjects, and he injects extra-vibrant colour and fluidity into the subtly simplified shapes that make up his paintings.

Some of his work has a peculiar fantasy feel, or at least an exaggeration of reality - but is that not what good art is meant to do? I for one find it a joy to see aesthetic, exciting alternative perspectives on the world. That makes me think.
Peter Doig - Ravine
His recent exhibition at the Tate Britain was well received and a joy to view. It spanned the last two decades of his work, and included over fifty paintings alongside a wealth of group works on paper. The exhibition also included many pieces previously unseen in England. These new works were created since his move to Trinidad in 2002.

This was another excellent Tate exhibition adding to the growing list of justifications for the outlay of my Tate Members pass. If you missed it in London, there are two more chances to view the exhibition, one at the ARC/Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris from 26 May – 14 September 2008 and the other at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, Germany from 8 October 2008 – 11 January 2009.
