Get hold of a 10-12 inch (A4) sketchpad of cartridge paper too, I’m using about 120-180gsm in most of the tutorials on this website. Also get a cheap sketchbook for practising and outdoor sketching, and purchase a small pad of tracing paper which you will primarily use for Shape Exercises.
You will need some masking-tape (Scotch tape) sooner or later, so get a small roll of that too.
Optionally, for ‘posh’ drawings I suggest you order some Canson Mi-Tientes pastel paper – it comes in large sizes and you can choose from a wide range of colours. It is hard-wearing, forgiving and has a perfect texture for high-quality graphite renderings. I use the back side of this paper, as it has a smoother surface.
So in summary:
- 2B and HB Pencils – preferably mechanical with inter-changeable leads
- Xacto knife/craft knife/scalpel if you are using wooden pencils
- Wooden sandpaper pad
- Grey, kneadable Eraser (putty rubber)
- Medium-sized drawing board (approximately 50cm/20inches on longest side)
- Cartridge paper sketch pad
- Masking tape (Scotch tape)
- (Optionally) Some pale colours of Canson Mi-Tientes pastel paper
