Realistic Drawing Techniques – Head Portraits

Focus on the hair when your pencil is going blunt. Use the blunt pencil to create soft edges, and a nice contrast with the face which has a very smooth texture (in this portrait).

Also, sketch and shade the areas of the hair in the direction of the hairs, but always try and be subtle with your strokes – as usual, try your hardest not to indent the paper.

You want the outer edges of the hair to be more sketchy and blurred (essentially out of focus), than the centre of the image.

This will also exaggerate the depth of field and give the drawing more dimension.
